Is it possible to test timber piles with PIT?
Yes, engineers can use PIT to test timber piles to verify length. The wave speed in timber is like concrete. Different piles, however, may present different wave speeds. Often, wood piles are tapered, which may cause the velocity signal to drift gradually upwards. When using PIT to test timber piles, definite answers are not guaranteed. The data becomes even more difficult and often impossible to interpret when the wooden piles are already part of an existing structure.
